Moai

Moai are the monolithic human stone sculptures of Easter Island. The massive statutes are generally thought to be representations of the deified ancestors of the Rapanui people, who likely produced them between 1250 and 1500 CE. Carved from soft volcanic tufa, the statues range from 10 to 40 feet (3 to 12 meters) high, with some weighing more than 80 tons. Nearly half are still at the main moai quarry, but hundreds were transported and set on platforms around the island. How were they moved? More... Discuss

Baghdad Bombings Kill and Injure Hundreds

A series of coordinated car bombings in Baghdad have killed at least 127 people and wounded more than 400, devastating government institutions across the Iraqi capital. The attacks came just days after government officials agreed to hold national elections in March and may have been intended to destabilize the region and discredit the government in advance of the vote. The military initially denied these allegations, but, nearly 40 years later, in 2005, NASA made what admission regarding the suspicious object? More... Discuss

Although he defended gas warfare against accusations that the practice was inhumane, his wife's suicide is believed to have been prompted by his work. Despite Haber's conversion from Judaism and his service during World War I, he was exiled from Germany following the Nazi rise to power. Which of Haber's inventions did the Nazis likely use to kill many of his relatives during World War II? More... Discuss
